Academy Etiquette


At Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu Pacific Beach, we expect all staff, 

students, and visitors to abide by the Six Blade Values: 

Family, Respect, Loyalty, Discipline, Attitude, and Honor. 

We ask all to act as leaders in upholding the Academy Etiquettes. 

We are committed to creating and maintaining the best quality 

environment for our community to teach, learn, and train.

General Rules


  1. Silence phones while in the Academy. If you must take a call, please exit the building.

  2. Do NOT step on the wood mat frames. 

  3. Place bags and training gear in the cubbies.

  4. Use the dressing rooms to change. 

    • The restroom and areas next to the mats, cubbies, or benches are inappropriate places to change. 

    • Remain covered outside of the dressing rooms - do not “hang out” shirtless or in a sports bra.

  5. No cursing in the Academy. 

  6. For items left at the Academy, please see the policy below:

    • Uniforms (gi, rash guard, spats, etc.) will be washed with a $10 fee per item

    • Underwear and socks will be disposed of.

    • Other clothing items, shoes, water bottles, mouthguards, etc. will be kept in the lost and found until the last Saturday of each month.


Mat Etiquette


  1.  Students must check in on the iPad before each class.

  2. Students MUST inform their instructor of any existing injuries prior to class. Likewise, if students become injured during class, please inform the instructor immediately.

  3. Sit cross-legged or samurai position (no knees up or feet out) during instruction or while resting on the mat. 

  4.  Bow to the center of the mat when entering and exiting.

  5.  If students are late, wait outside the mat for the instructor's authorization and quietly enter the mat without disrupting the class in session. 

  6.  Talking should be kept to a minimum and related to the curriculum being taught.

  7.  Students are here to learn from the instructors, be present, and leave life outside of the mats.

  8.  Students belts must be tied and gis straightened accordingly upon completing each drill or sparring activity and when entering or exiting the mats. 

  9.  Address color belt instructors as Coach and black belt instructors as Professor

  10.  Inform the instructor if you MUST leave the class early or leave the mats outside of designated breaks.


Safety & Hygiene


  1.  Students MUST wash their Gi after each class. 

  2.  Remove all jewelry before class: earrings, piercings, necklaces, hairpins, etc. 

  3.  Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back.

  4.  Do not wear perfume or lotion to class.

  5.  Students must remove any make-up prior to training.

  6.  Students must keep their fingernails and toenails trimmed and clean.

  7.  Students must use awareness, respect, and technique when drilling and sparring to prevent injury.

  8.  All cuts or wounds must be adequately covered with a bandage and or tape.

  9.  Students must not train when sick or contagious.


LIABILITY WAIVER


I hereby submit my WAIVER to the Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu Pacific Beach. I hereby assume full responsibility and liability for all damages, injuries, and losses that I may sustain or incur while participating in or watching activities within the Dojo.


I realize that serious injury is commonplace in martial arts schools such as the one I am hereby entering; and that even death is a possibility. I also realize that if I am injured, I might be disfigured, disabled and/or rendered unable to work again. By entering into this agreement, I realize that regardless of how these consequences might occur, I accept the risk of being present at the Dojo and give up and waive all claims I or anyone acting on my behalf or through me might have against the Dojo, and any owners, instructors, employees, members, and guests of the Dojo for any injury regardless of its nature, effect on me as a result of my participation in activities and/or presence at the Dojo.


I authorize and agree to hold harmless whatever medical personnel may be present at the Dojo to take any action necessary should I become injured. I further understand that filmmakers, photographers, and spectators may be present at the Dojo, and activities there may be videotaped, photographed, or otherwise shown to audiences around the world. I hereby consent to have my likeness shown, publicized, commented and/or reported on, and I do not expect to, and in fact, waive any compensation I might otherwise be entitled to as a result thereof. I represent that I am in good health; that I am not presently, nor will participate in activities at the Dojo while under the influence of any drug or medication; that no one affiliated with the Dojo has made any representations regarding my fitness or ability to participate; that I have read and understood every provision of this release; and that I am legally competent to and freely enter into this waiver, release, and assumption of risk agreement.
